The whole tone of the ALT.NET movement is off putting.

Why can't the whole thing be summed up as an alternative to the coding and standards as defined by Microsoft and their lacking and often dangerous MSDN samples. Call it ALT.MSDN and be done with it.

I hear so much of the ALT.NET community imply things like move to Ruby on Rails, and Python does it better etc...great but uhm...not .NET (I know IronRuby and IronPython are coming...but they are not released yet right?) It kind of feels like ALT.NET was founded by Manchurian Candidates, secret Microsoft loathers, who are trying to whip up a group of people to follow them and then one day make them all drink the NON/MS Kool Aid.

Ok maybe that's a bit melodramatic.

@Scott:

I think that we're actually in agreement here with my conclusion that there is room within ALT.NET for all of these points of view which I think implies that they are indeed ANDs as you suggest (despite my use of the word versus in the categories used primarily to show the distance between the different extremes).

I'm not sure that I'm actually *predicting* anything here per-se but I would certainly agree that nothing about ALT.NET is very predictable at all :D

None of these issues are "versus" issues. This perspective is one of the great failings of the community: the inability to take awareness to the level where these are all "and" issues. While radical contradictions this may cause, radical contradictions cause radical reconciliations, and the birth of new models and paradigms.

It not all as trivial and predictable as you've depicted here.
